Welcome to the McWilliam's Wines Academy

The McWilliam’s Academy of Wine will provide professional, accredited wine education services to all McWilliam’s employees nationally, plus all qualifying employees of wine retail, restaurants, clubs, hotels and resorts. Course material, handbooks and other relevant material based on the AQTF Training Packages are already in place and updated to meet the needs of individual customers. (These course are not offered to the general public) The Academy's Wine Educator is Michael Quirk, who has been educating for over 25 years in the Wine, Hospitality, Sales & Marketing trade both here in Australia and oversea's.

Objectives

The objectives of the McWilliam’s Academy of Wine is to provide professional, accredited wine education services in order to;

  • contribute to the development and dissemination of professional wine knowledge to the wine and hospitality industries nationally;
  • encourage and nurture budding enthusiasts to place the triumph of a ‘Wine Career’ in our hands;
  • create awareness that the McWilliam’s brand delivers more than just wine:  history, education, technology and masters of wine;
  • be recognized as the ‘first choice’ in preferred wine schools of Australia;
  • demystify ‘wine’ to the community as a health benefit with moderate consumption;
  • encourage consumers, through education, to appreciate the consumption of wine with food as an acceptable lifestyle activity that has the potential of improving quality of life.
  • Gain acceptance in key trade influences.

The McWilliam's Wines Academy (No: 90967) provides the following introductory and intermediate tier courses:

  • Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) SITHFAB201 - Approved Training Provider - OLGR- NSW, QLD, WA, SA and NT.
  • Certificate I - Bronze Level Wine Knowledge
  • Certificate II - Silver Level Wine Knowledge

As an Approved Programme Provider (APP) for the internationally recognised Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) of London, McWilliam's Wines Academy offers the following qualification as their Certificate III - Gold Level in Wine Knowledge:TRADE ONLY ENQUIRIES FROM SALES MANAGERS.

  • WSET Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Wines & Spirits

Bronze Level 1 Wine Knowledge

AN INTRODUCTION TO WINE

The course is ideal for candidates who have entered the wine retail, sales and hospitality industries recently and are looking to learn more wine theory and formal tasting procedures.

Qualification: Certificate I in Hospitality (SITHFAB005A - Provide table service of alcoholic beverages)

Pre Requisites: Statement of Attainment in Responsible Service of Alchohol (SITHFAB009A)

Duration: 7 hours (includes a 30 minute written assesment)

Delivery: One full day educational delivery with Wine Tasting.

Time: 9:30am to 4:30pm

Silver Level II Wine Knowledge

WINE KNOWLEDGE AND SALES

This course provides a greater depth of product knowledge and sales across a broad range of Australian and international wine. It will focus on comparative varietal tastings and comprehensive tasting note development across a broad range of wines. With a direct focus directed to improving wine sales in retail, restaurants/cafes and online services.

Qualification: Certificate II in Hospitality (SITHFAB310 - Provide advice on Food & Beverage Matching, SITHFAB305 - Provide advice on Australian wines, SITHFAB306 - Provide advice on Imported wines and SIRXSLS201 - Sell products and services)

Pre Requisites: The course is open to all students who demonstrate successful completion of equivalent ‘introductory’ wine courses or sufficient wine trade experience accompanied by references. (SITHFAB009A - Responsible service of alcohol and SITHFAB005A - Bronze Level Course)

Duration: 15 hours (includes a 60 minute written assessment plus a 30 minute practical assessment of wines)

Delivery: The course is presented over two days

Time: 9.00am - 4.30pm over two days

Price: $600.00 per person

WSET LEVEL 3 - Gold Level

(Trade Enquires Only)

Gold Level III Wine Knowledge

Successful candidates will be in a position to advise management, to answer customer queries authoritatively and to make informed selections of wines and spirits in a variety of situations.

These WSET 3 minute videos give a taste of the course content.

Qualification: WSET Level 3 Award in Wines & Spirits

Pre Requisites: The course is open to all students who can demonstrate successful completion of equivalent ‘intermediate’ wine qualification or sufficient wine trade experience accompanied by references.

Duration: 51 hours (this includes a 1hr 45 minute written assessment and a 30 minute blind tasting of two wines)

Delivery: The course is presented over seven days split over two consecutive weeks

Time: 9.00am - 5.00pm x 6 days over 2 weeks. The assessment is completed on day seven: 9.30am - 12.30pm

Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) - Approved Training Provider for OLGR (NSW)

THE RSA COURSE IS RUN FOR OUR TRADE CUSTOMERS AND MCWILLIAMS WINES GROUP EMPLOYEE'S ONLY. Cost: $100 per person (TRADE ONLY)

From 22 August 2011, the photo competency card will replace paper-based RSA certificates.
